I cannot believe we're already in September. I say this every month, but this year is flying by so fast!

August was my best reading month this year, by far and away. It more than made up for the measly 6 books that happened in July, and I even added three books to my Best of 2016 list. It was also a good time for audibooks, with a total of 106 hours of listening time.

I'm sorry, but I just did not like this book. My initial thoughts were much more positive than how I feel now, because as time went on, I disliked the book more and more. I did not like Lily or her reasonings, and as someone who's experienced similar situations, I feel I'm in a good position to say that. I despised Ryle, and the excuses made for him.
Atlas was the book's saving grace.

Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Untraditional Beach Reads

Hey, ladies!

It's Top Ten Tuesday by The Broke and The Bookish! Today's topic is all about beach reads (could also be just general vacation type read!). Personally, I don't really care for the typical beach reads as my beach reads. I like my beach reads to be more actioned packed, adventurous and enthralling, rather than light, fluffy and easy to set down. Hey, if I'm on vacation, that means I have time to get absorbed in a great story! Plus, I'm in Florida and get to be on these beaches year round. ;)


With that in mind, here are a few of my favorite "untraditional" beach reads!

10. Donners of The Dead by Karina Halle

***A Standalone Horror Romance***

A note about this book: Donners of the Dead is set in 1851 – couples were often thrust into marriage together with short courtships, racism was widespread and not overly frowned upon, and women had little to no rights. What wouldn't fly in today's day and age was unfortunately the norm back then - it is worth keeping that in mind when reading this book.


Jake McGraw was unlike anyone I’d ever known. He was brash, rude, unapologetic and arrogant; chauvinistic, close-minded, and terribly stubborn. He was built like a tree, tall with a hard chest and wide shoulders and hands that looked like they could wrestle a bear. He was a cigar-chomping, scruffy-faced, beast of a man. I was pretty sure I hated him. And I know he hated me. But among the flesh-eating monsters in these snow-capped mountains, he was the only thing keeping me alive 

The year is 1851 and pioneers in search of California gold are still afraid to travel on the same route as the tragic Donner party did years before. When the last wagon train to go into the Sierra Nevada mountains fails to arrive at their destination, Eve Smith, an 18-year old half-native girl with immense tracking skills is brought along with the search party, headed by an enigmatic former Texas Ranger, Jake McGraw.

What they find deep in the dangerous snow-covered terrain is a terrifying consequence of cannibalism, giving new meaning to the term “monster.” While the search party is slowly picked off, one by one, Eve must learn to trust Jake, who harbors more than a few secrets of his own, in order to survive and prevent the monstrosities from reaching civilization.

I actually read this on the beach last year, same date as today! 

9. The Stars Never Rise by Rachel Vincent

Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she's too busy trying to actually survive. Her town's population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. Completely addictive and kept me on the edge of my seat. 

8. Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning

"My name is MacKayla, Mac for short. I'm a sidhe-seer, one who sees the Fae, a fact I accepted only recently and very reluctantly.

My philosophy is pretty simple - any day nobody's trying to kill me is a good day in my book. I haven't had many good days lately. Not since the walls between Man and Fae came down. But then, there's not a sidhe-seer alive who's had a good day since then."

One of my all time favorite series. May be time for a reread! 

Because Barrons. Duh. 

7. Killing Sarai by J.A. Redmerski

Sarai was only fourteen when her mother uprooted her to live in Mexico with a notorious drug lord. Over time she forgot what it was like to live a normal life, but she never let go of her hope to escape the compound where she has been held for the past nine years.

Victor is a cold-blooded assassin who, like Sarai, has known only death and violence since he was a young boy. When Victor arrives at the compound to collect details and payment for a hit, Sarai sees him as her only opportunity for escape. But things don’t go as planned and instead of finding transport back to Tucson, she finds herself free from one dangerous man and caught in the clutches of another.

While on the run, Victor strays from his primal nature as he succumbs to his conscience and resolves to help Sarai. As they grow closer, he finds himself willing to risk everything to keep her alive; even his relationship with his devoted brother and liaison, Niklas, who now like everyone else wants Sarai dead.

As Victor and Sarai slowly build a trust, the differences between them seem to lessen, and an unlikely attraction intensifies. But Victor’s brutal skills and experience may not be enough in the end to save her, as the power she unknowingly holds over him may ultimately be what gets her killed.

This is their story…

While I didn't feel the romance as much as I wanted to, it was still a very enjoyable and action-packed read. 

6. My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent

She doesn't see dead people. She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who'll be next. 

Another Vincent book. I'll admit to not being a big fan of this first book, but the series got so much better as it went on. A really unique premise and the only love triangle I've ever read that was well done, too! 

5. Monster in His Eyes by J.M. Darhower

Ignazio Vitale is not a good man.

I suspect it, the first time I see him, sense the air of danger that surrounds the man. He has a way of commanding attention, of taking control, of knowing what I'm thinking before I even do.

It's alarming and alluring. It's dark and deadly. It's everything I've ever wanted but the last thing I truly need. Obsession.

It doesn't take him long to draw me into his web, charming me into his bed and trapping me in his life, a life I know nothing about until it's too late. He has secrets, secrets I can't fathom, secrets that make it so I can't walk away, no matter how much I beg him to let me go. I see it sometimes in his eyes, a darkness that's both terrifying and thrilling. He's a monster, wrapped up in a pretty package, and what I find when I unmask him changes everything.

I want to hate him.

Sometimes, I do.

But it doesn't stop me from loving him, too.

Absolutely loved the tension in this one!

4. The Bird and The Sword by Amy Harmon

Swallow, Daughter, pull them in, those words that sit upon your lips. Lock them deep inside your soul, hide them ‘til they’ve time to grow. Close your mouth upon the power, curse not, cure not, ‘til the hour. You won’t speak and you won’t tell, you won’t call on heav’n or hell. You will learn and you will thrive. Silence, Daughter. Stay alive.

The day my mother was killed, she told my father I wouldn’t speak again, and she told him if I died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would trade his soul and lose his son to the sky.

My father has a claim to the throne, and he is waiting in the shadows for all of my mother’s words to come to pass. He wants desperately to be king, and I just want to be free.

But freedom will require escape, and I’m a prisoner of my mother’s curse and my father’s greed. I can’t speak or make a sound, and I can’t wield a sword or beguile a king. In a land purged of enchantment, love might be the only magic left, and who could ever love . . . a bird?

This book is absolutely worth the hype. Amazing, and I don't even like fantasy! It's now on my best of 2016 shelf. Full review to come soon. 

3. Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neill

Merit, Chicago’s newest vampire, is learning how to play well with others. Other supernaturals, that is. Shapeshifters from across the country are convening in the Windy City, and as a gesture of peace, Master Vampire Ethan Sullivan has offered their leader a very special bodyguard: Merit. Merit is supposed to protect the Alpha, Gabriel Keene—and to spy for the vamps while she’s at it. Oh, and luckily Ethan’s offering some steamy, one-on-one combat training sessions to help her prepare for the mission.

Merit must accept the assignment, even though she knows that she’ll probably regret it. And she’s not wrong. Someone is gunning for Gabriel Keene, and Merit soon finds herself in the line of fire. She’ll need all the help she can get to track down the would-be assassin, but everywhere she turns, there are rising tensions between supernaturals—not least between her and a certain green-eyed, centuries old master vampire.

I was skeptical with this series up until book 3, but it's now one of my very favorites!

2. King by T.M. Frazier

Homeless. Hungry. Desperate.

Doe has no memories of who she is or where she comes from.

A notorious career criminal just released from prison, King is someone you don’t want to cross unless you’re prepared to pay him back in blood, sweat, pu$$y or a combination of all three.

Warning: This book contains graphic violence, consensual and nonconsensual sex, drug use, abuse, and other taboo subjects and adult subject matter. Although originally slated to be a standalone, KING is now a two part series.

Complete and utter guilty pleasure.

1. Lover Awakened by J.R. Ward

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. And there exists a secret band of brothers like no other - six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Of these, Zsadist is the most terrifying member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

I've only read this one, but I really enjoyed it. Made me cry, swoon, and my heart pound!

4 "What a Ride!" Stars!

This book has been on my TBR for ages, and when I found it on Audible, I knew I had to dive right in. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed this one!

The prologue gives you a snippet of about 70-80% into the story, not enough to spoil anything (at least, nothing more than the synopsis gives), but enough to pique curiosity. I'm not normally a big fan of that kind of intro, but it worked flawlessly with this story. It set me on edge and made it so I wouldn't be lulled into a false sense of security. I never once forgot that Ignazio was not a normal man, never forgot how much darkness was in him, and that added such a layer to the story.

Speaking of Ignazio, I...kinda love him. I'm always a fan of the anti-hero, and boy, was he ever something. Well crafted, dimensional, and intriguing. Smooth and cunning, ruthless when it came down to it, yet oddly tender and romantic. Needless to say, I can't wait to read the second book, which is in his POV.

The heroine, Karissa, is a young college student, a seemingly average girl, and the type of character I don't usually mesh with. I initially brushed her off as the typical naive girl, but as the story went on, I found myself liking her more and more. Is she naive, idealistic, and sheltered? Yes, quite a bit. However... that worked for her here. Despite her initial state, she was smart and enjoyable as the story went on. It was an interesting process to see her eyes open to the world around her, both the good and the bad. 

There were a few times where I found myself thinking "my god, why did you do that?!", but I was quickly reminded of just how young and inexperienced this girl was. With that in mind, my thoughts ended up being sympathetic towards her, and liking her more for making mistakes. I had to remember that Karissa didn't get the prologue I read, and she didn't have that foreshadowing influencing every interaction.

Ignazio and Karissa had fantastic chemistry, despite a big age gap. It was easy to see how their relationship became so all consuming, and that worked well for the story.

My one complaint was that the chapters often ended abruptly, creating jolts in the story and interrupting the flow.

However, the plot kept me riveted and constantly on the edge of my seat. Never a dull moment!

The narrator did a great job, too!

Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it. :)

{Book Review} Soulless (King, #4) by T.M. Frazier

3.5 "Crazy Bastard" Stars

Well, the Goodreads summary blows. :p  You can read my 4.5 star review of the first book in this couples' story, Lawless, by clicking here, but to recap the gist of the first book's storyline:

The third book in the King series focuses on Bear, the late 20s, roguishly sexy member of the MC Beach Bastards. When we first met Bear, he was hiding out from the head of the MC, who just so happens to be his father. After some unspeakably terribly events in book two, Bear is not the same man he used to be. He's laid down his cut and left the MC, drowning himself in booze, drugs, and women. 

Enter Thia Andrews. 

Thia first met Bear at the age of ten, in a rather unusual way. Now eighteen and wrongly accused of a sickening crime, Thia explodes back into Bear's life with the force of a hurricane. 

With the law closing in on Thia and the MC gunning for Bear, these two are riding the most intense, adrenaline-fueled roller coaster imaginable. 

In Soulless, we pick right back up and are thrown into chaos. With Bear's old MC splintering apart and loyalties going every which way, it's nearly impossible to know who to trust. Their wrath has now extended to Thia, and Bear will stop at nothing to stop it, even though it means going toe to toe with his own father.

This is the fourth book in the King series, and while you can start Lawless first, I would highly suggest reading in order.

It was far from a romance. But it was still a love story. 

I was so anxious for the next installment of Bear and Thia's story after the epic cliffhanger in Lawless. I immediately dived into this book, and devoured it in less than a day. It was fast paced, action packed, sexy and addictive.

T.M. Frazier has a way of making me like things I normally can't stand to read about, like:

Age gaps

Beards (I don't get this current beard craze! Stubble and scruff is great, but not a beard)

Motorcycle clubs

Instalove

Extremely possessive men

Despite my dislike of them, I always enjoy it when Fraizer writes it!

Bear was as beautiful as he was hard. He was as complex as he was simple. He was both the storm and the calm. The fear and the solace. The rage and the peace.

My life and my love. 

The sex was hot, the pacing fast, the writing engaging and captivating. I couldn't wait to get back to reading it whenever I was forced to put it down. I love the rich Florida setting, the appearances of beloved characters, and the distinctive voice of both protagonists. 

Soulless had one of the most interesting side characters, a real mass of contradictions, and I can't wait to get her story. 

The series is a bit like an overly dramatic show or movie - a guilty pleasure you can't help but love, even though it can get a bit extreme sometimes.

This one fell a little flat for me in a few ways. The series has always been a tad over the top (in a good way!), but Soulless bordered on ridiculous on more than one occasion. I belong to the author's Facebook fan group, and I felt like there was a lot of fan pleasing in this book; almost like the author would've taken a slightly different road if not for the fans' murmurings. One rather big reveal really shouldn't have been possible with a subplot in a prior book, and it just so happened to be something the fans were most loud about. 

Love isn't about wanting a hero. It's about wanting to be one for the other person. 

Overall though, I did enjoy the book! I laughed, cringed, bawled like a baby and panted like a dog in heat. It was a smoking hot, addictive, wild ride, and set the scene for future books. I suggest trying this series!

My Review

4.5 "Wild and Crazy" Stars

This is the third book in the King series (click to read my 4.5 and 4 star reviews for King and Tyrant), and it is best to read them in order to get the full effect. However, I think you could dive in with this book without being too terribly lost. 

I discovered T.M. Frazier's novels earlier this year, and have become obsessed. They are wild, sexy, incredibly fast paced, and more addictive than crack. I can't get enough of them, and it's never taken me longer than a day to finish one. Lawless was no exception.

Frazier's stories shouldn't be as enjoyable to me as they are. Everything I think I don't like is crammed into these novels, such as:

Age gaps

Motorcycle clubs

Truly Neanderthal heroes

Drug and alcohol use

Insta-love

Did I mention motorcycle clubs?

It doesn't matter, though! I may not like those things in general, but what Frazier writes it? Damn, do I love it. 

I absolutely loved Lawless! It was a wild, sexy ride that I could not put down. The dual points of view really highlighted the differences between the protagonists, as well as the startling similarities. The Florida setting was rich and three dimensional, and as a Floridian myself, spot-on accurate. You feel every emotion that runs through the characters, and I found myself nauseated, turned on, anxious, and wild throughout the novel.

Bear was a very interesting hero. He wasn't your typical bad-boy-that-is-actually-a-good-guy, and he never claims to be anything than what he is. He's loyal to a fault, surprisingly intelligent, and incredibly resilient. I would suggest reading the first two books to fully experience and appreciate what he went through, but even if not, you're slammed with the impact. I grew to really respect him as a person, even though he isn't your typical idea of a good guy. 

Thia was a character I had a harder time wrapping my head around and understanding at first, but by the ending of the novel I was completely sucked in. She was mature and astute, especially for her age, and had a way of cutting though the bullshit. She was a heroine unlike what I've read before, and I loved having that breath of fresh air. 

Love. It was the only kind of torture I wasn't familiar with. I was quickly learning it was the most painful kind of them all. 

These two seemed so different, in everything from upbringing to age to outlook, but they were incredibly well matched with fantastic chemistry. The age difference factor that normally squicks me out didn't bother me in the slightest here. They're both old in some ways, and very young in others. They balanced each other out, and despite the very short time the novel spans, they formed quite the connection. 

"I wanted you because of who you are, not regardless of who you are."

The story was incredibly intense, wild, violent, sexy, and with non-stop, heart pounding action. I couldn't put it down, and it has one bitch of a cliffhanger. I highly recommend! 

The second book comes out in February, and I can't wait! One of my most anticipated for the new year.
