The Sunday Post/It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

Hey guys!

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead. It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a fun weekly meme hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date where we share what we've read and reviewed over the past week and what we plan to read next.

This week and especially yesterday have been so, so stressful. I'm freaking beat, haha.

On the bright side, lots of reading this week and I'm 1 book away from being halfway done with my Goodreads reading challenge!

4 stars!

4 stars!
Ridiculous, shallow, hilarious and wildly enjoyable.
4 stars? 3 stars? I think?
LOVED the first half, and the second half and ending just fell completely flat.
3 stars!
Fun story about a male romance writer, but it was completely derailed by the idiot bitch of a heroine.

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine and is a fun way to see what books other bloggers just can't wait to get their hands on!

January 10th

In this modern day spin on Leroux’s gothic tale of unrequited love turned to madness, seventeen-year-old Rune Germain has a mysterious affliction linked to her operatic talent, and a horrifying mistake she’s trying to hide. Hoping creative direction will help her, Rune’s mother sends her to a French arts conservatory for her senior year, located in an opera house rumored to have ties to The Phantom of the Opera.

At RoseBlood, Rune secretly befriends the masked Thorn—an elusive violinist who not only guides her musical transformation through dreams that seem more real than reality itself, but somehow knows who she is behind her own masks. As the two discover an otherworldly connection and a soul-deep romance blossoms, Thorn’s dark agenda comes to light and he’s forced to make a deadly choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or face the wrath of the phantom who has haunted the opera house for a century, and is the only father he’s ever known.

Best of The Best: 2015 - Miscellaneous Class

Hey, ladies!

Happy last-day-of-2015! Today's best of 2015 list is the miscellaneous class; these are the books I loved, but don't read enough of the type to fill an entire post (or, as in the case with the erotica section, didn't read much that was good ;)). It's a mishmash!

Best Horror
A refreshing take on vampires, touched with romance and with a very unusual setting.
My Review
Book 3 in the Experiment in Terror series. I'm not gonna lie: I slept with the lights on after reading this. *shudders*
So. Damn. Creepy.

Best Historical
This is fantastic smut! Well written, deliciously filthy, with a good storyline along with the fun times. The only historical I read this year, ha ha.

Best Erotica/Erotic Romances
Shhhh....I know, I know. It's complete trash, but I can't help but love it and the rest of the series. Completely addictive!
So filthy. So well written. So suspenseful. So. Damn. Dirty.
This would win if it was just a battle of epic smut. The storyline faltered, but otherwise....*fans self*
My Review

Best Non-fiction
Raw, honest, and eye opening. I loved it.

Best YA
Wildly entertaining, well written, and a surprisingly emotional read.

Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Creepy/Paranormal/Whatever Books Perfect For The Halloween Spirit

Hey, ladies!

It's once again time for The Broke and The Bookish's Top Ten Tuesday! This week's theme is a Halloween Freebie, one I've been looking forward to for quite a while. You can do whatever you like so long as it keeps with the Halloween vibe, be it 10 scariest books, 10 vampire novels, ect. A fun topic!

I'm doing a bit of a hodgepodge of ideas, from books that are creepy, to a few that actually scared me, to some great paranormal ones. Too ADD to stick to one category! Regardless, they're all fantastic Halloween reads. ;)

If you want an absolute mindfuck, try.....

10. Nocte (Nocte, #1) by Courtney Cole

This is a fantastically dark and twisted tale, full of mystery, madness and romance. Click here for my review.

If you like things on the lighter side of paranormal, try....

9.  Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires, #1) by Chloe Neill

This was a lighter read that was funny, enjoyable, and a page turner. It was an unusual take on vampires, since the human population is totally aware that the fanged ones live amongst them. I'm looking forward to starting the next book!

If you want action, killer (literally) characters, and some seriously sexy times, try.....

8. Halfway to The Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost

My favorite paranormal series! It's action packed with an awesome heroine, tons of humor, delicious smut scenes, and one of the best casts of side characters. The narrator for the audiobook is fantastic, and it's one of the only series where I'd suggest the audio version over the printed. Plus, Bones. <3

If you want to sleep with the lights on, try.....

7. Dead Sky Morning (Experiment in Terror, #3) by Karina Halle

I don't scare easily in books. Oh, I'll get a bit freaked out, but not genuinely, sleep-with-the-lights-on afraid. This book, though....scared me shitless. The series is  romantic horror with some paranormal elements, and is one of my all time favorites.
This is the third in the series, and they need to be read in order. All I'll tell you on this one is: ghosts, a horrifying child that left me with nightmares, and being trapped on an island. It was my own personal nightmare, and I freaking loved it.

If you'd like to emotionally scar a pre-teen, try....

6. Pet Semetery by Stephan King

I was...11, maybe 12 when I read this. It took two weeks before I was comfortable in the dark again.

If you want an unusual take on YA paranormal, try....

5. My Soul to Take (Soul Screamers, #1) by Rachel Vincent

This series deals with banshees, and I'd never read about that before. It was really interesting! The series doesn't start out that strong, but each book is better than the last, and the last three are fantastic! Love triangle warning, but I actually didn't mind it and was happy with who she ended up with.
You'll love Tod, by the way. *swoon*

If you're in the mood for a funny ET, try....

4. Obsidian (Lux, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

The entire series was a solid 3 stars and complete guilty pleasure for me. While pretty much everyone adores this series, it has a lot of issues. I admittedly think JLA can be a bit of a lazy author, but for a guilty pleasure, easy to not think read? You can't beat her.
This was funny, and for the most part enjoyable!

If you want something truly spine chilling, try....

3. The Hallowed Ones (The Hallowed Ones, #1) by Laura Bickle

This was such an unusual book! I loved the way it handled vampires; they weren't the seductive, genteel creatures you've become accustomed to. No, these are true monsters.
Click here for my review.

If you want a grim reaper, try....

2. First Grave on The Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones

While I'm not as crazy about this series as everyone else, it's a really enjoyable story with a quirky heroine, a smoldering love interest, and tons of humor.

If you want travel, Fae, kick-ass action, world building, and the best alpha of all time, try.....

1. Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning

This is more Urban Fantasy than Paranormal, but it's still worthy of note! It's creepy, intense, wickedly sexy, and has some of the best character development I've ever read, not to mention gorgeous world building. The first one isn't the best, but the others? God.

Oh, and do you want to meet the best alpha male ever created? You can if you read this. Jericho Barrons...mmm. These are my thoughts on him:

Book Review: The Hallowed Ones by Laura Bickle

Add to Goodreads

From Goodreads:

Katie is on the verge of her Rumspringa, the time in Amish life when teenagers can get a taste of the real world. But the real world comes to her in this dystopian tale with a philosophical bent. Rumors of massive unrest on the “Outside” abound. Something murderous is out there. Amish elders make a rule: No one goes outside, and no outsiders come in. But when Katie finds a gravely injured young man, she can’t leave him to die. She smuggles him into her family’s barn—at what cost to her community? The suspense of this vividly told, truly horrific thriller will keep the pages turning.

My Review:

On the cusp of her Rumspringa, Amish teenager Katie is nearing the time of her life. She and her best friend Elijah plan for an epic adventure in the world of the "Outsiders", where after they will decide if they wish to return home and become baptized as fully fledge members of the Amish community.
A helicopter crashes into the Amish community, and Katie sees the faintest glimpse of a sinister.....something among the wreckage. Despite the Amish's attempt to write the crash off as "God's will", several other horrific events occur and throw the community into uproar. Something terribly has happened in the Outside world, and it looks like the Amish are the only ones safe from the catastrophic event. The Elders of the Amish forbid anyone from going in, or coming out. They completely cut themselves off from the Outside world.
Just a day later Katie finds a young man, Alex, injured just outside of their fence line. When the Elders leave him to the elements and "God's will", and forbid anyone to help him, Katie smuggles him into her old barn and hides him as he recovers. From there we are thrown into a world of horror, gore, and a slow building romance, all while racing against the clock as we watch humanity crumble and the community splinter.

The Hallowed Ones was an incredible, spine-chilling read! I had no idea a story set in an Amish community could be so intense and frightening, but I couldn't read this book at night. It had my heart racing and my stomach churning at nearly every chapter!

I went into this book almost totally blind; all I knew was that my favorite author gave it a 5 star rating, and that was enough for me. I didn't at all expect what went down with this book, but holy hell, what a ride! I hardly know anything about the Amish, and their culture was fascinating. Shocking at times, but still so interesting.

"Faith is one thing. Survival is another."

The Hallowed Ones has so many subplots that come together to form a beautiful, complex story. It was so much more than a horror book, more than a paranormal, more than a romance. It was religion clashing against morals. Head over heart. It was having to turn against everything you've ever known in order to do the right thing. It was about corruption of a very powerful position. There was just so much depth to this story, and Laura Bickle is a gifted author to be able to pull so much off and combine it all to form one obsessive and thought provoking read.

I wanted my life to matter.
And I wanted to choose how it mattered.

Katie may just be one of my favorite heroines of this year. She was very smart, and such a genuinely good person. Her quiet determination and rebellion was a breath of fresh air. Despite being a very unique protagonist in a situation I've never read about, I could easily relate to her. She was a vivid and three dimensional character.
It was interesting to see how she struggled with her feelings of wrongdoing, even when she was doing exactly the right thing. Seeing the effects being raised in the Amish community had on her thought processes kept me riveted in the story, and I loved being in her head. The whirlwind of fear, panic, rebellion, determination and questioning going on inside her made a fantastic voice for the story. Her character arc was incredible to see!

Alex was an equally interesting character. It took quiet a while for me to get a good read on him, but once I did I truly enjoyed his character and the dynamic he shared with Katie. I really enjoyed their romance! It was both slow building and fast paced, but it worked beautifully with the story.

The secondary characters were nearly as vivid as the protagonist herself, and it made for a gorgeously rich story. Getting to know each character and imaging how they'd affect Katie gave the story such an intense feeling of anxiety and fear. It felt like I was inside the story as an integral character, rather than a passive observer. I'm not kidding when I say I was having physical reactions of sweating palms, a churning stomach, and a pounding heart as I read this.

"It was nothing like you see in the movies, these creatures.  There's no seduction. No passionate luring of the victim to a dark side of velvet. This is just the stinking, rotting underbelly of evil without its makeup."

The story features vampires, but not in the way you may think. These creatures aren't sparkling emos or genteel apex predators. No, these are monsters of the worst variety. They are evil. There isn't a shred of good or humanity left in them. They are the anti-Christ, and they are appalling.

I couldn't read this book at night, and several times I had to stop and set the book down just to take a breather. It's an unusual horror, because while it does have some scenes of "oh shit, we're all gonna die!!!", there's a constant thread of fear and panic throughout the book that made every horrifying encounter all the more heart pounding.

The Hallowed Ones is technically a Young Adult book, but it does not read like one. At all. It's intense, it's gory, it's downright scary, and it's incredibly violent. I'm honestly shocked it's in the YA section.

The ending was a little bit flat in some places, and I have so many questions I need answered, but there is a sequel and I will be picking that up ASAP. I can't wait to get my hands on that book!

Overall, The Hallowed Ones is an fast paced tale of horror, love, and standing up for what's right. I highly recommend it, and I suggest you read with all the lights on. ;)

Book Review - The Stars Never Rise by Rachel Vincent

From Goodreads:

Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she's too busy trying to actually survive. Her town's population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.

When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she'll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie's sin has put her in serious trouble.

To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?

Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can't survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.

My review

Nina Kane is a smart, practical 16 year old whose sole focus is for her and her sister to survive the grim town of New Temperance. In a world where souls must be assigned at birth and soul consuming demons are a terrifying threat waiting in the wings, there's no time for anything besides scrounging for food and money.

New Temperance is run by The Church, a cruel and unforgiving government. In New Temperance, sins are brutally prosecuted as crimes. Nina's sister, Millie, has committed one of the most awful sins a young person can commit, and Nina will do everything in her power to protect her. In doing so, Nina unleashes a secret she never suspected about herself or her family, and there she's helped by Finn, an unusual exorcist who has all the answers she's looking for.
Caught in the crossfire between The Church and the demons, Nina must rely on Finn and his band of rouge exorcists if she wants to stay alive and rescue her sister.

Holy shit on a shit stick, this was an unputdownable read!
Rachel Vincent has an addictive way of writing, and I'm a big fan of her Soul Screamers series. The Stars Never Rise had her trademark style and showed off her growth as a writer.
It was extremely fast paced, gritty, horrifying, wildly engaging, and  different from the typical YA paranormal. I'd call it more of an urban fantasy than a paranormal.

If I was going down, I was going down fighting.

I enjoyed being in Nina's head. She was very smart, analytical, protective, and driven. Despite the hand she was dealt and horrifying way she discovered her true nature as an exorcist, she wasn't the least bit whiny or self pitying. That is so refreshing to see in a genre that is choked with whining, obnoxious characters that make me want to reach through the page and shake them.
Nina's dedication to her sister was done in a way to show that she was the older sister caring for the younger, not a mother figure. That was an unusual twist in the now common theme of older sibling being caregiver, and I really appreciated it.
She was definitely my kind of protagonist!

Nina's sister, Melanie, annoyed the crap out of me. Thankfully she doesn't have much page time, but she was so stupid and self centered. Her sister sacrifices everything for her, and she's beyond ungrateful. Despite how much she ground on my nerves, I liked what she added to the story.

I was so iffy on Finn in the first part of the story, worried that this would be the typical knight in shining armor YA love interest, but he grew on me. As I learned more about him, he became my favorite character. He was such a good person, honest and unapologetic for his feelings, and I loved him by the ending.

I noticed a few similarities between this book and Vincent's Soul Screamers series, such as the bitchy but smart and funny side character Devi who reminded me so much of Soul Screamers Mara, but overall this book was hugely different. Different from most YA I've read, actually. It's not a common idea to use this type of urban fantasy/dystopian/horror/romance, and it was lovely to read that.

I feel like my life is a book, and someone turned the page before I was ready, and now I can't follow the story.

The book spans the course of three or four days, and as you can imagine it is very fast pace. Had I not been so busy last week, I could've easily devoured this book in one sitting. The pages practically turn themselves. There's next to no dragging in the plot, and it kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The world building was fascinating, and I was surprised at just how much of it was fit into such an action packed read.

The beginning and ending of The Stars Never Rise were so strong, though the middle was weaker. I started getting a little disappointed in the middle, but then it picked back up and sucked me right back in. The issues I had with the book surfaced during that time, and by the ending they were nearly all resolved. The book isn't that long, either, and I applaud Vincent for being able to turn it back around in such a short time frame.

I was honestly shocked at just how horrifying and violent the world in this book is. It had me shuddering and saying "damn" on more than one occasion. There's one scene in particular that I would not expect to see in a YA read. While it wasn't hugely detailed, the brutal violence of the scene was sickening. It really showed that this world was not to be messed with.

It does have the obligatory romance, and I was extremely dubious with it at the start. It seemed like it was going to be the typical, flat insta-love that is so prevalent in YA, but by the end...well, I ship them. I ship them hard. It wasn't your average romance, and I'm dying to see where this goes.  The best thing was that the romance was not a huge feature in the book. Just enough to be enjoyable. Vincent is a big fan of love triangles though, so I'm really hoping this series won't feature one.

Overall, The Stars Never Rise is an incredibly promising start to a fast paced and absorbing new YA series, and I highly recommend it. I'm salivating for the next book, which should be released next June!
Wait...next year?!?! I can't wait that long!
