Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Hyped Books I've Never Read

Hey, everyone!

Today I'm joint in The Broke and The Bookish's Top Ten Tuesday. This week's theme is top ten hyped books you've never read. I'd been thinking about doing this for awhile, and this was the perfect thing to get my ass in gear.

In no real order:

10. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

Gasp! That's right, I've never read the Outlander series, and I don't plan to. Historicals are not my cup of tea, and I have to be really invested in a book to sit through nearly 1,000 pages.

9. Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan

Actually, I've never read any Rick Riordan. This is pretty much THE nostalgic book for people around my age, and saying you never read it is akin to saying you don't like Harry Potter (*cough* which I don't, either *cough*). Fantasy has never been my thing, and I was busy reading the Maximum Ride books by James Patterson when this series started blowing up.

8. Divergent by Veronica Roth
Technically this isn't one I've never read, but I didn't finish it. I picked up each book in the series, read the first few chapters, and remembered why I put the previous one down.

7. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Or any John Green book. I saw the movie, and I know my sister loved the book, but from the bits I've skimmed and the reviews I've read, it doesn't sound like something for me.

6. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
This is one I want to read this year, and  I can't believe I never read it. It wasn't required reading,  and despite my mother prodding me to read it, I never picked it up.

5. Grey or Fifty Shades Freed by E.L. James
No. Just no. I read the first two books, but despite how much I laughed, I couldn't slog through the rest of that sheer stupidity and botched attempts at writing.

4. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
Alright, so I kinda read it. I read around 30-40%...and couldn't sit through the rest. It's. So. Damn. Predictable! And "grinned the ghost of a grin"? That's just one of the things that drove me crazy about this book.

3. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
And love triangles ruin another book I wanted to read.
Fuck you, love triangles.
Authors, you know you can write books without the drama of a triangle, yes?

2. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
The writing. No. I just can't do it. Skimmed a bit and slapped it back down onto the library shelf. That type of prose is not for me. Makes me want to gouge my eyes out with scissors, to the extent I can't even enjoy the story.

1. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Or any Rainbow Rowell. The stories seem a little...cutesy (?) for my taste, but I've been meaning to snag one of her books just to see what all the hype's about.

What about you? What hyped books have you not been sucked into?

  1. I haven't read Outlander (I only made it halfway, I stopped before all the really bad things happened), Grey or Fifty Shades, The Fault in Our Stars or The Lightning Thief. *sigh* I was less than impressed initially with Throne of Glass, but then I went back and read The Assassin's Blade (all 5 prequel novellas) and was blown away. Fear not on the love triangle, it's really only in Throne of Glass. By book 2 it's gone:)

  2. While I don't usually read YA as a teacher in my past life I have read Divergent and The Lightning Thief! And am a big fan of the Outlander series, but I did start out reading it when it first published so I don't have a huge series staring me in the face!

  3. That's encouraging about Throne of Glass--I've had the same concern. I found Lightening Thief too boring to finish and found 2 installments of Outlander to be plenty. If you're worried about Rainbow Rowell being too cutesy, I'd try Eleanor and Park before Fangirl. I got obstinate and refused to read any 50 Shades, just like I've never seen Titanic. Not that I've never read or watched anything trashy or popular, just...not those.

  5. YESSSS Finally someone who hasn't read Fangirl, I feel like almost everyone has read it and I'm just like should I or should I not read it soon, ha.

  6. We were liars I feel the same way about. I couldn't get into it. It was something about the writing.

I enjoyed Divergent but not the second book.

TFioS was another I couldn't get into I liked the movie better.

City of bones was okay for me, but I havent read the last 3

  7. Oh my gosh, GASP, I can't believe you don't like Harry Potter! What!? Sacrilege!! :P

Honestly, The Lightening Thief and the rest of the books in that series are really good if you like mythology which I love and it was a really fun way to visit it.

Divergent and the following books were SO good and you're really missing out with the Mortal Instruments. Her writing just got better and better with each book.

The Fault in Our Stars was freaking amazing, it's a tearjerker but it was so good.

I'm with you on Grey, though.. NO, just NO. I can't believe she's rewriting those horrible books!!

  8. Throne of Glass and Outlander are at the top of my TBR even though they aren't my usual genres. I loved TFiOS, Divergent, and TKaM. TMI series definitely got better as it went, but her Infernal Devices series is my favorite! I haven't read Fangirl yet, but Mckenzie and I both adored Eleanor&Park. Hype or not, you read what you want to read; and no matter how popular, not every book is created for every reader. Thanks for sharing :)

  9. I haven't read Harry Potter and most people gasp when they hear that, it's just that I've never felt the desire to pick them up. I've watched most of the movies, though. I haven't read Fangirl, but I have a copy and want to. I won't read The Fault of Our Stars, I don't do cancer books willingly. Divergent was good, but I have the attention span of a gnat so my excitement for book two waned. Also, I heard a lot of complaints about it. I'm not reading Grey. I loved 50 Shades, but I don't want to re-read from a different perspective that might taint my memories. Great post! :)
